Potential from Background Research

Tourism potential, as determined by the background research presented, was a mix of tourism
and natural attractiveness, environmentally sustainability and resiliency, carrying capacity,
accessibility and encounter norms, and resources present. The complexity and diversity of criteria that
must be considered for a project such as this was high. The model relies on the availability of
accurate data and the successful integration of user-input data, user surveys and preferences, with
digital data. Success can be determined by the creation of a model that looks at an assessment of
tourism potential areas through a reasoned process using current, quality data. The ideal model is a
combination of other methods, models, and points of view, and chapter 4 presented background
research that outlines different methods for tourism potential development.
Determining tourism potential involves co-operation between all stakeholders in the tourist industry
including tourists (users), tourism operators, and the government departments involved. The
Department of Tourism and Culture and DNR must have a significant and legitimate role in the
process. There must be an abundance of quality operators and tourism facilities, as well as quality
supporting infrastructure such as airports and other transportation services. Background research has
linked tourism potential not only to quality resources and facilities but to having a diversity of these
quality attractions within the given study area.
