Potential of Crown Lands in IRM

Through a closer examination of the Integrated Resource Management, and consultation with
planning staff involved in its development and application, it is clear that this data was a good source
of information for determining tourism potential. The system attempts to plan for the future and
minimize land use conflicts. Tourism potential of crown lands within the IRM (Integrated Resource
Management) data can be determined through comparing this information with the tourism values
specified by the client, the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture, in their project tender. In
this tender the department outlined the following tourism values as being important elements in terms
of modelling potential; scenic viewplanes (water and land), hiking corridors, canoe portages, canoeing
and recreational fishing waterways, wildlife viewing opportunities, cross country ski routes, beaches,
snowmobile trails, coastal access, and scenic waterfrontage.133 The Integrated Resource Management
data was quite useful in determining tourism potential as many of the values within it matched those
tourism values alluded to by the client in their tender.
