N.S. Topographic Data
The 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 digital national topographic system mapping to be used as the
base map data for modelling is available from the Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre for a cost. This
mapping is in DXF and NTX formats with a NAD 83 projection. Layers available through this
mapping are boundaries, geography, hydrography, contours, land use, and transportation mapping
for the province.165 This data was important to all the tourism potential models as it provided the initial
base layer of data input for the model development. This topographic base map layer was common to
all models and provides information on facilities, existing infrastructure like roads, power, etc., and
on elevation changes and hydrological features of note. This basemap information is somewhat dated
as it is from the late 1980s and the basemap data for the Annapolis Valley area. Since this is the only
basemap data available it can be used for modelling, but the concerns mentioned above should be kept
in mind.
